Karim Abou Zahab is a Sustainable Transformation Technologist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). He partners with HPE’s largest customers, stakeholders, and governments to develop low-carbon solutions to business challenges, share best practices, and drive new business opportunities.
Overview
The presentation covered various aspects of sustainability and how it can drive efficiency within organizations. Karim highlighted HPE’s Living Progress, net-zero transformation, and the five levers of sustainable transformation and provided insights into navigating the rise of AI and increasing energy costs.
IT Sustainability: a Catalyst for Efficiency
The presentation began by emphasizing the role of IT sustainability as a catalyst for efficiency. Karim explained how sustainable IT practices can lead to significant improvements in operational efficiency and cost savings for organizations. By adopting sustainable IT solutions, companies can reduce their environmental impact while enhancing their overall performance. Karim highlighted HPE’s achievements in sourcing renewable energy, reducing emissions, and setting science-based targets for suppliers, which have positioned HPE as a leader in sustainability within the IT industry.
Driving Net-Zero Transformation Across the Value Chain
Karim then delved into the specifics of driving net-zero transformation across the value chain. He shared data on HPE’s progress in sourcing renewable energy, reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and decreasing emissions associated with the use of sold products. Karim emphasized the importance of collaboration with suppliers to achieve these goals and highlighted the company’s commitment to science-based targets. Karim provided an overview of HPE’s legacy of sustainability leadership. He recounted the company’s achievements prior to 2015, including the launch of a customer recycling program, the development of the HP Supplier Code of Conduct, and the establishment of energy efficiency goals. These milestones have laid the foundation for HPE’s continued leadership in sustainability.
The 5 Levers of Sustainable Transformation
Karim addressed the challenges posed by the rise of AI and increasing energy costs. He discussed how meeting enterprise climate targets and managing the rising costs of computation and data storage are critical for CIOs and highlighted the evolving needs of customers, who are shifting from merely meeting regulatory requirements to proactively addressing inefficiencies. Karim introduced the five levers of sustainable transformation: software efficiency, data efficiency, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and equipment efficiency. He explained how these levers can be leveraged to drive sustainable transformation within organizations. By focusing on these areas, companies can achieve significant improvements in their sustainability performance.
Continue to Minimize the Impact
Karim discussed strategies for minimizing the environmental impact of IT operations and highlighted the importance of heat reuse, lifecycle services, and the use of renewable energy. He emphasized that continuous efforts to minimize impact are essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals. Karim provided insights into HPE’s IT Sustainability Solutions Portfolio and how it can help organizations embed sustainability across their operations. He discussed the importance of engineering end-to-end efficiency and how HPE’s solutions can support this goal. By adopting these solutions, companies can achieve greater efficiency and sustainability.
Measuring the Impact
At the end Karim explained the importance of measuring the impact of sustainability initiatives. He introduced HPE’s Sustainability Insight Center, which provides metered reports and measurement tools for energy consumption, energy cost, and use-phase carbon emissions. He emphasized that accurate measurement is crucial for tracking progress and making informed decisions.
